Maybe they weren't paying you, but what do they show their grandkids? Film and processing aren't as cheap as they used to be, but they are still cheaper than screwing up a job. Two days ago I put a test roll through my camera to test one of my Vivitar 283 strobes and some diffusers that I made for it. There is no guessing or wishing now. I know what it will do.
I put a test roll through every new or new-used camera to check the light meter and film combination. If it's off one stop then its just off one stop and I make allowances for it, but at least I know before I miss something I can't reshoot.
