With Failed software upgrades that makes sense, in many cases you can go back to an earlier version, with failed firmware upgrades you often have an usable device that can no longer even update it's own firmware and requires expert intervention. (if a user has the expertise for the repair then they are an expert, but they still have taken the responsibility for the result).
