I have the predecessor of this. Mine has the vertical rather than
horizontal grip. It's certainly strong enough for the stuff you
mention. I don't find the head at all useful though, and I have hardly
ever used it. The problem for me is that when you release the grip it
tends to shift slightly from the position you've framed. More
seriously though is that you can't really track with it - you need one
hand for the grip, another hand for the shutter release, and a third
hand for focussing (assuming you sometimes focus manually) or zooming.
I find a conventional ballhead much more usable - I have the 499-RC (I
think) which is very good indeed, and I would recommend it over the
grip ball head.
