Hi Dave My knowledge of these things is limited but the first thing I would do is open the case and make sure the video card is seated firmly in its slot.
Others will probably have better advice but, if all else fails you can retrieve your un-backed up stuff by getting hold of one of the Linux Live DVDs such as Knoppix. These boot the PC up independent of Windows and should give you access to your hard disk and CD/DVD writer so that you can get files off the machine. The Knoppix and other live Linux systems are often on the cover disks of computer magazines.
