I think your argument loses itself with longer focal length lenses. A 600mm 
lens is going to have a big image circle no matter what. It's just the 
nature of the beast.
Logic dictates that small image circle lenses should be much smaller than 
35mm coverage lenses, but this isn't really panning out in many cases. The 
12-24mm zoom is huge, the 14/2.8 is very close to the same size as the 
15/3.5 (admitedly it is also a half stop faster).
The new Limited lenses are quite small, but they get their compactness by 
trading off maximum aperture.
