Have you done any of the video tutorials? They are the quickest way to learn how and why the various things in Lightroom work. For $15, the Luminous Landscape tutorials are excellent. And they cover all the new stuff in LR 1.1 as well.
If you read up on what Clarity and Vibrance do, you might find them to be very useful. I think Camera Raw v4.x has them too.
