They have that around here too, but feral cats aren't the same threat to 
local fauna in Massachusetts or North Carolina that they are in 
Australia or New Zealand.

They do have natural predators around here, for the most part feral 
dogs. We don't have the coyotes, but they're headed this way (mainly due 
to the elimination of *their* natural predators).
