I see it the same as you do. The shadow seem to be in front of the bird.
Perhaps the water is 100% in level. Another explonation is that it is Lucky 
Luke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Luke see first illustration), not a 
Loon as I presumed :-)

I just checked and I guess it is part optical illusion.
To me, it looks like the bird's beak is 1 cm ahead of itself in the 
reflection.
I know this isn't true, I just checked with Paint Shop Pro.
I will say that the elbow in the bottom wing's reflection looks 1 cm ahead.
Perhaps this is because the white part in the real wing fades into the sky.
