The C41 process is standardized, well specified, and produces only  
the negatives. How well calibrated a given C41 processing machine is  
depends on the specifics of who's maintaining it. Most do a  
reasonably good job.

How nicely a given negative is printed depends both on how well the  
printing machine is calibrated as well as who's operating it.

Printing B&W on a C-print photofinishing machine can have very  
variable results depending upon who's doing the printing and which  
C41 B&W film in particular you're using. Most C-print photofinishing  
machines are printing on color paper. Kodak C41 B&W films are easier  
to print on color paper than Ilford, but results from either can be  
quite variable depending on the printer/operator.
