There are no compatibility issues between the files. The only issue is one of media used for transfer -- while a Mac will quite easily and cheerfully read and write a PC formatted floppy or zip or CD, the opposite is not true. Easy solution: always format your discs for PC. As to lag time, I haven't been closely following the releases. When was the last office for PC? Office XP? Office 10 for OS X should be shipping soon.
