Well, using hot lights is very different in some ways than using flash,
and I would assume that a car photographer who lights each piece
separately would be using continuous lights, not flash.  Even if a studio
flash has a modelling light, it sounds like it would still take so much
time to set up the shot that continuous lights would be easier.  So I
don't see a problem in this case with the photographer's claim to not
understand flash photography.
