My experience, primarily with the bass, is that Fender and Gibson 
(Epiphone) aren't worth the time or money once you get into the Taiwan 
and China made instruments.  I've had some friends with Yamaha guitars 
who were pleased.  So I'll give them a look.

If that's the case with the Martin guitars, they're probably a lot like 
the Fenders and Gibsons - simply paying for the brand.  It's not a 
matter of "afford" or "saving up".  It's simply that I'm not willing to 
pay more than a few hundred bucks for one.  I no longer have aspirations 
of playing for an audience (other than my kids, maybe), or making any 
money, or god forbid, going "on tour".  I miss the hobby aspects of it, 
and that's really all I'm interested in.
