Why thank you, Adam.

I learned to pan out of necessity. When I workd at Motor Magazine twenty years
ago, my boss absolutely loved pans. Among my duties was shooting the new cars
at the various car company long leads. If I didn't come back with at least half
a dozen good pans, I would catch hell. For the most part, I shot them with a
Mamiy 1000TL and a Vivitar 200/3.5 lens. The cars were being driven by other
journalists and usually moved at forty to sixty mph. I would shoot at 1/30th of
a second. That big, heavy Vivitar lens had enough heft to enable a smooth
sweep. I soon learned that it was important to twist my upper torso as the car
was picked up down the road. Then I would unwind as I panned so that I'd be in
a forward, comfortable position at the moment of shutter release. I also
discovered that the follow through is critical. The shutter release came in the
middle of the pan, but the movement had to be continued until my torso was
twisted in the opposite direction from where I began.

BTW, I shot with that Vivitar lens for at least fifteen years and made a lot of
money with it. In the end it was held together with duct tape, and the front
element was scratched from cleaning tire rubber off of it with my T-shirt. (I
used it to shoot drag racing as well.) It now holds a place of honor in my
camera display case.
