What OS are you installing?  You may need to load extra drivers for your 
motherboard's SATA controller.  Also, depending on the age of the 
controller you may need to use a jumper on the drive to limit the 
transfer rates.  As I recall I had drives that my system didn't detect 
and it turned out that I need to use the jumper.
