Mine has a very quiet fan, the two drives burbling away like a coffee maker are noisier than the fan, but I did read a few complaints of noisy fans, and then rebuttals on the reviewers blog from other users who had quiet ones. And the thing is SLOW. It took about 5 hours to drop 225GB of data from my internal RAID to the Drobo. It certainly isn't suitable for use as a working hard drive, but Data Robotics pretty much says that too.
