I remember a few years ago the SETI collective computing project was off line for quite some time after some thieves dug up and tried to steal the copper phone cables running into the university that hosts the project. Just recently the press has covered a number of cases of theft of lead from church roofs and catalytic converters from vehicles for the platinum.
