Pages may be ugly, but Flickr is all about pictures which can be viewed in all sizes. It is fast; there are no adds like in photo.net; there is unlimited upload in file size and number of pics for a cost lower than of a domain/webhost (or free for < 200 pics) - so you can use it as online back-up; uploading and interface is easy; you can find contact with photographers with similar interest only if you want this; there is good protection of private pictures but you can invite family to see these. In summary, my experience is not negative.
