True enough. Actually, in retrospect the 5DmII will actually have a huge application professionally. Currently, more and more newspapers are arming their stills photographers with low-end video cameras for their web content. I see many a snapper struggling with unfamiliar kit as they bang off a few shots as demanded by their bosses. Most hate it. The 5DmII will give them the familiarity of the kit, and the flexibility of moving images without burdening them with yet more hardware. As far as broadcast applications, they will be very limited. The camera is simply too limiting in its assumed current state (it's not actually released yet!), and the lenses available will not offer a zoom ratio demanded by - say - news and sport. Although I can actually see an application for covert filming with such a camera. If you look at what a proper broadcast camera in a news role actually constitutes, there are many ancillary pieces of hardware literally bolted/velcroed/bolted on. As well as a method of recording video, you have to be able to light it - on the move. So on top you have a 12 volt light capable of illuminating at least a couple of faces within 6 feet of the camera. Don't forget the power required to run this light. Big battery capacity needed - with little room for spares when away from the vehicle. Sound is another requirement. Broadcast cameras have at least 2 audio inputs (XLR type) and many's the time I have two presenters holding 2 radio mics, transmitting to 2 receivers - one slotted into position between battery and camera, the other velcroed onto the side. They all power off the camera battery. I could go on.... The 5DmII will establish a firm place with photojournalists and news photogs, and may even see service with location scouts, real estate agents, anyone who would normally provide stills and new-world web content. Very interesting market about to open up as this takes off - video editing. The smart money at Apple will be coming up with a product half- way between iMovie and Final Cut Pro. I would expect a big explosion in simple editing software to cater for this new clientele in the coming years. -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche ||=====| http://www.cottysnaps.com _____________________________ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
