The 17-55's the best of Canon's normal EF-S zoom (oddly, the other good performer is the 18-55 IS, the 17-85 is notably worse). However you may have a bad copy. Give a few copies a try at a good store and compare. None of the other options have IS, but the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 HSM and Tamron 17-50 f2.8 are both known to be good performers. -- M.
