The area I'm in makes a lot of shoes for brands like Adidas, Nike and Reebok, clothes for brands like Polo. Dell and Kodak have large factories. Costs are low. Factory workers, $200 US a month tops. New university grad for bottom of engineering or management chain, $300 to $500. Hours are long. I'm not sure about the factories, but waitresses in a typical restaurant are at work maybe 10 AM to 11 PM or later, maybe with naps when it is not busy, 7 days a week. A day or two a month off, plus about two weeks at new year. Jobs in foreign companies are eagerly sought; they are seen as having better pay & conditions than the Chinese-owned ones. A friend runs a bar, pays wait staff rmb 1000, about US $140 a month plus a bed in a shared apartment. Six-day week, most shifts are 10 hours. His turnover is almost zero because these are such good conditions relative to the local market. This is in a prosperous coastal city, would be much less in the boonies. -- Sandy Harris, Quanzhou, Fujian, China -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
