Hi, I really don't think it's a question of 'Ick!'. It's relative to other lenses of comparable focal length in the same series. In a straightforward 1:1 comparison between the pancake and the M 35/2 the pancake comes of worse by almost any measure, and certainly wrt sharpness and resolution. This doesn't make it an 'Ick!' lens though.
