Paul, I had lots of CDr and DVDr failures, not all due to counterfeit media. I lost some 70% of my scanned files over the years, and almost the same ratio of digitalized VHS tapes. My problem with the tapes is far worse, since they were discarded. I started doing multiple sets, and soon after the failures started using different brands of media to the same content, to be sure. My future plans lean to mirrored high capacity hds with DVDs to off-site backup. but they're not so cheap around here, nor the motherboards able to support in style what I'd like to use - some $2400 to achieve 4Tb in an intel set, and that's a lot of film.
A good friend is using external HDs as backup, plugged only to move the content then stored, and that seems safer than DVDs. May be my next step towards the mirror.
