If it goes black, there are two most-likely explanations:
1. Overheating - hot LCDs go completely black.
2. Cheap-as-hell screen which isn't designed to use any reflected
light but relies on the backlight being strong enough to counter the
incoming light (and that's a tough job with the sun to compete against).
Some LCD displays, such as the one on my Garmin GPSMap 60c, look
absolutely gorgeous under bright sunlight with no backlight at all.
It's a treat to use that thing outdoors.
So what it comes down to is not what is possible with technology, but
what that particular manufacturer chose to do on that particular phone.
