Fangio certainly gets onto my shortlist, too.

Back in those days drivers were quite accessible, on or off the
race track.  One year our village held a charity cricket match
between our local team and the F1 drivers. It probably raised a
few hundred pounds, and for that we had a pavillion full of the
stars of the track.
