I understand your point, John - and agree about different times and
different persons.
Being brasilian is part of my Senna choice - but as I said before, I
acknowledge a gifted driver of any citizenship and there are lots of
them in the F1 and much, much more in other cars and tracks (or roads,
trails, sand dunes...). Giles was one, and for all I read about, Jim
Clark and Fangio. And from my own time Jack Stewart and Cevert and Lauda
and Fittipaldis (Emerson in open wheels, Wilson and Christian in sport
cars) and so on.
I followed Senna from the distance (Brasil is a huge country, and I'm
not so close to the F1 arenas in the southeast. But between the media
and advertising and the natural embelishment of any citizen of world
relevance I got an idea of a driven person, someone caught between the
need to better himself in a car and the "game play" of modern F1. And
from time to time I saw a person capable of enjoying speed above
anything else - even in an informal kart racing. He would constantly win
or second the "same car for all" races.
The human I noticed into the media creature I do consider the best F1
driver so far - and possibly the best racing car driver ever.
Please note I left out a certain brasilian F1 champion famed for the
small "tricks" like racing in the Super Ve class with a fake, painted
wood flame extinguisher to get a few kilos lighter than the others.
Being fast is not enough.

As you say, it depends on the era in which you got the bug.
I got bitten early on, so I still think nostalgically of the
days when drivers were "gentlemen", not "players". That's
probably why I pick Jim Clark. Schumacher was a product of
his time - he had more than a few wins under questionable
circumstances. So did Senna, who I would probably pick as
the most skilled driver. I never got to see him live, much
to my regret. But at least I did get to watch (and hear)
Schumacher flat through Eau Rouge at Spa. Still, there are
so many good drivers to choose from - I couldn't fault
anybody who picked Mario Andretti, Phil Hill, Emerson
Fittipaldi, ... from the open-wheel world, not to mention
many more excellent drivers from the sportscar ranks.
