A friend has an older Coolscan IV but his is a scuzzi version that wil not work with Vista and there is no further tech support for it from Nikon.
That would be a Coolscan II or III at latest. The IV ED is a USB 2.0 interface, the Super Coolscan IV ED is Firewire and USB 2.0.
The Epson V700 does a decent job with 35mm film but isn't quite up to the acutance of either the Coolscan IV ED or Scan Dual II. It tops out at about 2600-2700 ppi, and has a slight bit of haloing by comparison. Of course, it's also a lot more forgiving of minor film imperfections.
