There is a huge amount of difference. If you can shoot at 1/30 sec at 1.4 you'll be at 1/8 second at 2.8. There's a little difference in cost, new the 50 is about $200, I think I paid $250 for my 40 from prodigital2000 on ebay. If you're happy with manual focus, and especially manual exposure, you can get 50mm lenses very inexpensively, however the PFA 50/1.4 goes for about $185 used, so you might as well buy it new. For indoors and night photography the 50/1.4 is probably your better choice, unless you're using a flash. If there's a lot of light and you're walking around a city during the daylight, the 40 is a lot of fun to use, especially on a small body (*ist, K100, K2000 ...). -- Photographs are like sentences, the best ones have both subjects and verbs.
