Digital is NOT forever either, and you have to take even more care of it.

When the World Trade Center went down in 2001 the world lost (among other things, obviously) an archive of irreplaceable negatives of photographs from the Kennedy administration. Had those photographs been taken digitally, there would have been back-up copies on file in many other places.

As far as lifetime comparisons between digital and film it's six of one and half a dozen of the other.
