Paul, there may be a circuit, but specific batteries react differently to specific charges. Knowing the charge pattern of the device you're about to power gets you the chance to fine tuning the batt pack to great achievements.

That's also why the real world test of a specific batt with some particular camera plus the actual charger is much needed, and the ultimate word about how that items work together.

...and I spent two months trying to get the best result of a battery powered pc, sorting three types of mini-itx boards, five different power supplies and I want to forget how many solid state hard drives, pen drives, web cams and yes, batteries...

A little deviation...what's the output voltage on the Pentax battery pack? Does it give more flashes and a little better recycle time because the batteries just have more capacity or is there circuitry to step up the voltage similar to a HV battery.

Godfrey is correct. I use two 540 flashes, three sets of rechargeable NIMH batteries, all freshly charged, and the Pentax power pack that takes 6 C alkaline batteries. I also bring a second set of Cs for the power pack. However, I don't use Eneloops. I believe my batteries are Everready 2300s. Eneloops hold a charge longer but yield fewer flashes in continuous use.

Eneloop NiMh rechargeables for flash units make the most sense if you're going to use them often. Maintenance ... deal with it. ;-)

I don't use flash all that often so I use Lithium disposables.

If you're really serious about doing weddings on a regular basis, get a high-capacity power pack for your AF540FGZ. I wouldn't even consider taking wedding jobs without two of them and a backup flash unit, at the very least.

Anyone available to answer an alliteratively quaint and quick question?

Well, I was wondering what's the best battery to buy for frequent-flash photography. The bullshit batteries I bought for last weekend's white wedding were obviously obsolete for that oddysey of outbusts.

Alkalines are available all around, yet vary in their veracity and voltage volume. Lithiums last a lot longer, but buying them by the bag begets broke-ness. Rechargeables require regular monotonous mainenance and more money at the moment of purchase, but procurement provides a pre-existing power population in your pocket that pooh-poohs spurious substitution by shoddy successors.

Recycle rates, really, are the reason I ask about all this. My Pentax AF540FGZ needs a new and nubile change in the charge-chamber. Previous performance pooped out posthaste, posing a problem.

Suggestions?
