When I was young and hitch-hiking around Europe we often had to pitch the
tent late at night when we had no idea what our surroundings were like. At
least half the time we ended in places that were like that, where no one
would choose to pitch a tent. Some mornings we also woke up in surroundings
that were like paradise.

I know of a very nice city-centre nature reserve here in London where a
down-and-out has been living for years, pitching his tent every day in a
lovely spot. He's tolerated by the local people and the authorities,
probably because he respects the place, and is no trouble to anyone. Seems
like he's making the best of a bad job.
