I kept the old 17" crt monitor and therin lies my query. I am assuming that all the data used when I calibrated the monitor on the old computer has all gone bye bye. It must because the images now look much better all of a sudden. I haven't printed any photo's yet, so I have to do that to see how far out it is (or how close it may be if I'm lucky!).
I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. However, it sounds like it's dumped the color profiles for the old monitor and is using either generic ones or the right ones for the monitor. If you haven't already, check out the contents of any CD that came with the monitor. It may have monitor-model-specific color profiles. They won't be as good as custom profiles, but they'll be better than no profiles. :-)
BTW, Vista sucks!!!
Yes, it does. Though shifting to "Classic Windows" (I think that's what it's called) for the overall "Theme" helped massively. I just downloaded the first Windows 7 Release Candidate and I'll see if it's better or worse. :-)
