Yes but, in 1978 or thereabouts I crossed the road from the Avenue des
Champs-Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe through those eight lanes (with a
local, I hasten to add) and nobody even tooted...  I shudder to think of it
nowadays!

I still get the willies, fifteen years later, thinking about the 
roundabout at the Arc de Triomphe ... if I recall correctly, it was 
eight lanes wide and thirteen different roads met there, at least three 
of them major, major roads, like l'Etoile on both sides.
