Spend the bucks on a gimbal mount head. I've made the decision to do that myself. I'm tired of fighting with ball heads and 3 way heads with my 300 ƒ2.8. For images of stationary items I use a geared head, but for birds, planes, and running dogs I think a gimbal head will be best.

Does anyone here have any pros or cons on that decision?

Well, I don't have a 300/2.8 but I hand hold my 300/4.5 and use a monopod with ball head for the 400/5.6. Of course, I'm shooting moving cars on a race track, so that might be a significant difference.
