Subject: Monopod advice

I figure it's best, as far as possible, to benefit from the learning
experiences of others rather than repeating them.

So, the stuff I think is relevant:
   - I'm 190cm/6'3" tall
   - unlikely to be trying this with a lens over about 2.5 kg
   - stability/strength over lightness, though I'd rather not feel as
though sticking a ballhead on a length of gas pipe might be the
     better option
   - lots of the places I try to take pictures have a generally soft or
     uneven substrate

Any advice, recommendations, horror stories?

I have an older Manfrotto that I am quite fond of. I just had a look at their website and they seem to have "improved" upon it by putting lever locks onto their leg sets. Personally, I don't trust the things. My monopod has twist locks, and I like them fine.
So, I'd be looking elsewhere than Manfrotto.
I just had a look at the Feisol website.
Their CM-1471 looks quite nice. 170cm maximum height with an 11 kilo loadout is a nice solid support. It looks like it would be more or less the same leg as is on my large Feisol tripod, which I am using to hold my Wimberley head and 600mm lens with no issues at all. Add their CB-50D ball head (it's a very nice little head) to it and you'll have a rig that is slightly too tall for you at maximum extension.
They also sell ground spikes.
