It's a precision cut piece of steal, and the price hadn't changed in 20-30

Nope. Lomo's adapter costs about $9 and has the same quality.
I've heard stories about non Pentax/Asahi adapters getting stuck. Some third party adapters have flanges that won't allow the lens to focus to infinity. Thirty years ago, (damn that makes me feel old), when I bought my first MX, I bought an Asahi Optical Co. M42 to K mount adapter, I paid $19.99 discounted from the list price of $35.99. I thought they outrageously expensive then. I bought my second from e-bay about 5 years ago, also an Asahi Optical Co. for about $5.00, new ones labeled Pentax Corp. were selling for gasp about $30.00. There's really nothing short of smashing them between a hammer on an anvil that can go really wrong with them, so look for a used one on ebay.
