Joe,

At work, I have my MacBook Pro printing from a USB port through a
USB-to-parallel converting cable to an HP LaserJet 5MP printer, which must be
10 or 15 years old. The same sort of thing might work with Laserwriters.

that's a usable option for laser printers without ethernet, but Joseph's printer does have ethernet and can be used with IP printing; the advantages of IP printing over USB-parallel adapters are that it is built-in and faster; uses cheaper & less bulky cables, plus it will automatically share the printer on a wired or wireless LAN; it's also more likely to be supported long-term than the USB adapters

the way to get these same advantages with a printer like yours is to locate an HP JetDirect box that would serve to add an Ethernet interface to your printer; i've seen these for $30 or less on eBay; make sure you check that the one you want is compatible with your specific printer (i think most external JetDirects are)

of course for that price you can often find a low-mileage laser printer with ethernet ... $30 is how much i paid last year for an HP laserjet 4000tn with 5 toner cartridges (good for probably 15,000 pages)
