The following is strictly MY OPINION, FWIW ...
For Pentax to remain viable, their next DSLR offering has to be as
much of an improvement over the K7 as the K7 was over the K20. I
know that's going to be hard to achieve.
I think full frame and improved auto-focus speed is going to have to
be part of that. And they're going to have to have glass available
to take advantage of those improvements.
I think Pentax can be competitive, even a market leader. If that's
what they want.
Without jumping ahead and reading the replies to this, I'd like to
voice my opinion.
Hoya/Pentax in all likelihood does not have the designs aboard for a
new series of full frame lenses. Much of the inventory for sale now is
new old stock. To re-introduce their time tested FF lens lineup means
going back to the drawing board. Coming up with an array of lens
components to support SDM, a "new" look, weather resistant
construction, and two levels of sophistication such as they have now.
Expensive, and super-expensive. Big investment with how much return?
There would be no purpose in that unless they can come up with what we
are here bandying about. State of the art everything in a Pentax
branded body? Does Hoya even envision this? Especially if they go into
production with the 645D which would require some new lenses as well.
If they could come up to the level of today's high price brands, how
many sales are we talking? Many of us just got a K10 or K20, a few
have K7s. Of those, how many NEED a $4000 body, and a kit of lenses
that will set them back another $25,000, or more. Do you see a
significant number of N & C & O & S & X owners jumping to Pentax
unless it offers MORE than they can get sticking with their own
favorite? Well, maybe O & S & X owners.
I'm done. If the K7 doesn't do it for me in performance and AF, it
will be the last camera I own, even though I have a stable of 6 prime
and 6 zoom full frame AF lenses at my disposal. I currently have only
used 4 of those in the last year or two with my APS sensor bodies, and
not too often at that.
Count me as one who has no need nor desire for a new full frame
Pentax. Dealing with 14.6 MP per is hard enough with all hardware and
software that is required to process and store them.
Those of you with fewer years, deeper pockets, stronger shoulders and
so much more to look forward to as the technology progresses at it's
rapid pace should, and will, carry on in my stead. :-) Good luck
and good light!
