Hmm.  I've had pretty much the opposite experience.

I had Sony SL2700 Beta VCRs (in fact I've still got a couple somewhere)
that outlasted the later, cheaper ones.  I've still got a 25-year-old
audio amp hooked up to a linear motion record deck for playing my 12"
vinyl, and my SA-T60 DirecTiVo worked flawlessly until I left DirecTV.

With the exception of my current TiVos, just about every piece of A/V
gear in the house is Sony; four TVs of various ages, two A/V receivers,
speakers, etc. Even my Blu-Ray player (a PS3).

There is one piece of Philips gear - the region-free DVD player.
Sony units are hard to unlock, and I've got quite a few British DVDs.
