IIRC there was a spate of news not /that/ long ago about tablet computers. Basically a small laptop with a reversible screen that could be closed with the screen exposed to be used as a notepad with a special stilus. There was supposed to be a special version of windows for it as well. All the iPad seems to be is a tablet PC without the keyboard, limited available software and less expansion. True the least expensive iPad is less than half the price of least expensive Tablet PC I know about but still, it seems that there's a lot of hype here.

"Windows for Tablet PC" came out about the same time frame as Apple introduced the Newton ... or was that the fig?

The Tablet PC came about ten years after the Newton Message Pad: 2003 vs. 1993. There's an interesting article about the Tablet and Microsoft creative problems in general in today's Times. It's written by a former Microsoft VP who headed up the Tablet team. It's here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/04/opinion/04brass.html?pagewanted=2&ref=opinion
