A thought just occurred to me regarding the Japan-only availability... Bet it's a matter of throughput on the assembly line more than anything else. This is the sort of camera that's more of a long-term seller, so a small and slow but high-quality assembly makes more sense than flooding the market with a big-batch-and-be-done-with-it approach. Well... more sense to me anyway.
