Yes - I discovered his blog a few months back - very refreshing approach

I find that article somewhat smug and condescending. Sure anyone can
exist with only a bottom line camera + kit zoom but frankly most
photographers seriously pursuing the hobby would soon run into the
limits of such a kit.

He recognizes that too, and if you read more of his stuff he reveals that he most definitely isn't using a BOTLC+kit himself. :-)

A thought like yours went through my head after reading that, but in thinking about it later I decided that what he's talking about is "The Next Level". Everyone starts out by getting some gear and shooting for a bit, then deciding that more gear is warranted, more shooting, more gear ...

Then most likely at some point down the road you reach a plateau where as much as you are analyzing, reading and up-gearing, the less you are improving. So, says David, just go out and shoot *with what you've got then* (which could be a 645D for all we know) and concentrate on the art and science of the image making process.

Anyway that's how I read it. And I've been doing just that for over 6 months now; just shooting with my K20D and usually the DA* 55. Definitely not BOTLC+kit. Not poring over reviews and planning my next purchase.[*] And I've been making progress too. I'm seeing stuff in new ways and it's quite exciting.

Or I *was* making progress until all the hoopla about the 645D. Sigh. :-)

[*] OK, I did make a recent purchase. I got a roll-up mat for me to lie on for plant/flower macros. Total outlay: $2 at a 2nd-hand store. I didn't read any reviews; I may have been ripped-off.
