each portable audio player has its strengths & weaknesses -- you have a choice; but if you want to copy files directly to and from an iPod, it's slightly hidden (because apple is ruthless about simplicity, something i don't like either), but it's not really that hard; here's the first hit i had on a how-to search:

phone/touch/pad devices are harder; you have to jailbreak them, which is a high barrier for most people; the iPhone is part of a more highly-integrated system than the iPod; overall that integration is part of the value, or not, which you evaluate when you choose to buy, or not
