Absolutely right Keith: I do speak reasonable French, but am limited to
"Hello", "Goodbye" and "Thank you" in the languages of the other countries!
Pointing at pictures on an illustrated menu is a useful technique that
usually works!

No question you're right, John.
However...if you DO go to a crowded restaurant, be sure you or one of your 
table partners speaks the local language.
Nothing worse a hassled waiter hates than having to figure out what the heck

you're saying, what you want to order, because you don't speak the language 
fairly well...
ESPECIALLY in France!  :-)
