To echo previous comments, there are minor upgrade (point releases)
such as from 3.0 to 3.1 (etc.) and then there are major upgrades, such

major-upgradable (or if they are they are priced high enough that you
would be better off just buying a fresh education copy of the new
release.
I also suspect that even if the serial number is in the box, the
application is made to "phone home" to make sure that the serial
number is an authorized one and not a serial crack. On Mac's the
"phone home" can be optionally prevented with a program called "Li'l
Snitch". Not sure if an equivalent program is out there for Windoze.
ZoneAlarm is the Windows equivalent. Very, very good and it's
freeware. You can also block egress with a hosts file.
*Nothing* on my computer is allowed to phone home unless it's
absolutely necessary for the program to function *and* I give explicit
permission.
Adobe still has some tricks up its sleeve. I needed to download its
latest version of flashplayer (double ptui!) for some work I was doing.
Except....
Adobe doesn't download the programmes directly any more - even though
you click on a link to download and install flashplayer. You get some
crap called something like Adobe Download Manager. This pile of fester
decides to download the player for you. And any other piece of Adobe
(which I believe is a mixture of mud and shit) software it thinks you
need. It also appears to decide that it will make IE your default
browser, if you do not have it set that way. Amongst a few other things.
As I have said before, any harm I can do Adobe will be done with a song
in my heart.
