That's a pretty good description of the cheap stuff, under 20 rmb ($3) a bottle.
The expensive stuff -- up to 800 rmb ($120) -- is said to be quite a bit better.

Nearly all foreigners living in China avoid baijiu whenever possible. Many
drink the brandy, though. That also starts at about 18 a bottle, and is
quite palatable.

You mention a "rice/wheat/corn  alcohol". Often sorghum as well or instead.
