When I was using the *ist-D and Ds exclusively I would wear out a package of 12
of the rechargeable, recharging them about once a week, in about a year and a
half. They probably would have lasted longer if I had a better charger, but at
$24.00 for a package of 12 it didn't seem to to be an onerous cost. Now that
I have a K20D the *ist-Ds is just a backup and/or carry to sketchy places
camera. I bought a package of 12 disposable energizer Lithium batteries. They
get between 600 to 800 shots in constant use and the package has lasted about a
year and 1/2 so far with occasional use, though I'm on the last set of four.
Thanks, Peter. I've gone through a couple sets of lithium CRV3s. They last but
they're expensive. I have a supply of alkalines that I want to use up. I've
been wondering about rechargables after that. You're saying a week of steady
use out of a set of rechargables? And what makes for better or worse in
chargers? Cost?

Cost doesn't really matter that much, you can pay a lot for a crappy charger. There was a whole discussion of the best model charger you could buy a few years ago, Pre-K10D when all Pentax DSLRs used AA or CRV3 batteries. I'm not sure if any of the chargers that were found to be the best are still even made. However you need to look for a conditioning charger to get the best life out of a set of NiHms. I don't have one, just the charger that came with my first two sets of Energizers. If you go with single use lithiums I wouldn't bother buying CRV3s, unless you really need to quick change batteries in the field. The cost difference between a pair of them and the equivalent AA Lithiums is fairly substantial with little upside for the extra money.
