I can understand that, although it's pretty easy to keep the original image repository and Lightroom catalog together on an external drive. Just plug that into whatever system you want to use, as long as you have Lr installed on it. (It's not the best performing setup ... that's done by keeping the catalog folder on the fastest drive and the image file repository on another drive in my experience.) BTW, USB2 on the new systems is so well optimized that for still photography work there's virtually no difference in performance between it and FireWire 400. Move up to FireWire 800 and you gain a little bit of additional throughput.
