Hi all,
I was going to write something yesterday but decided not to. But now that
I have some photos I thought I may as well.
We had a magnitude 4.9 aftershock at about 10:30 yesterday morning local
time (Boxing Day). It was centered very close to the CBD, in fact it
seems to be about half a km from my mother's house.
We were in the art gallery at the time, having a look at the Ron Mueck
sculpture exhibition. That building is about the best place to be - it
was used as the centre of operations for Civil Defence during the period
after the main 7.1 quake. It's fairly new and very sturdy.
It'd been about a month since we'd had anything really noticeable and a
jolt like that was a bit of a wakeup. It was sizable enough to close a
number of historic buildings and part of the city pedestrian mall. I
haven't looked closely but I don't think there's any extra damage at home.
We had one small ornament topple over.
Anyway, today we went to see the other exhibition that we couldn't go to
yesterday as its building had been closed. I'd heard there had been some
damage to the aquarium building in Cathedral Square so I took my camera
and here are some photos.

This is the only building in the square which had obvious visible damage
after the main quake so I'm not really surprised that those bricks came
down.
