Thanks, David. I'll try going with what the *ist DS says in the viewfinder. 
[I've turned off the beep. Should I turn it back on?] I would be greatly 
relieved if it turned out that that was the problem. 

I don't know that we want to try to answer this question, but why would what 
looks in focus in the viewfinder through the lens be different from what the 
camera indicates? How could it be not in focus if it looks in focus? [Naive 
questions, I know.] 

Not that that it's gonna get corrected now with this camera, but wouldn't that 
be a flaw in the design of the camera? And I imagine I know the answer to this 
question, but I'll ask it anyway: If it does turn out that this is the problem, 
is there a way to recalibrate the camera, to bring focus and what appears to be 
focus into alignment?
