Assuming this is a Pentax DSLR, to do open aperture metering you'd have to be 
using an A, F, FA or DA lens. You could set the mode selection to any setting 
other than M or B. If the lens has an aperture ring, you'd set the ring  to 
"A," then choose your aperture or shutter speed using the camera's dials. The 
camera would then meter with the aperture open and you would be free to focus 
and shoot. Because the Pentax DSLRs don't have ....uh....certain hardware, you 
can't do open aperture metering with M or K series lenses.
